The idea that there is a different mask you hold for every situation and the public mask is one that adheres to social norms like

  • sit without slouching, sit with your legs closed, do not put your legs on another chair
  • cover your mouth when you yawn, say excuse me when you sneeze
  • do not listen to music without headphones

People may not choose to adhere to these behaviours but there is general pressure to do so. So it feels uncomfortable to not do these (because I just want to put my legs on another chair) but also uncomfortable to do this (coz people will frown at me and tell me off if I do put my legs on another chair)

and also whatever society views to be correct public behaviour may also be legislated

  • wear a mask
  • do not make noise after XX PM, be quiet

So people won’t act the same in public as they do when they are alone and that is ok, z-privacy is an actual need
